For the capable hobbyist or mechanic, we have put together a DIY solution for the 79 series cruiser. Obviously after 2 years and more than 100 setups on the road, we found that some people want to push the boundaries and others just want a nice 70 series in any condition. This pushed us to upgrade our VDJ complete kit, but we realised that the all out setup does not suit everyones goals, or everyones budgets. So here is what we call our DIY kit. Included in the kit are the following:

Billet Engine To Transmission Adapter

Billet Torque Converter Adaptor To Suit BMW N57/B57 8HP Torque Converter

Billet Transfer Case Adapter With Encapsulated Mounting System

EN26 precision machined and heat treated connecting shaft

TurboLamik TCU 2.0 with a supplied starting point base map for VDJ landcruiser

Heavy Duty Trans Mount To Cross Member Adapter

Modified Transfer case input gear (exchange basis; core charge can apply)

Stainless Steel Low Range Shifter Bracket Assembly

All bolts, dowels, brackets, tags and connectors relevant

Manual shifter and clutch hole blanking plates

This kit includes the major components of completing an 8HP swap in a VDJ vehicle. This is not a complete kit, and it is up to you to acquire the rest of the required parts.

Parts required to be sourced:

8HP transmission (N57 or B57 type 8HP70X or 8HP75X) this kit will only work with these transmission types

OEM VDJ 200 series flexplate, counterweight, spacer plate and flywheel bolts (available on this webstore)

Modify the internal TCU of the 8HP transmission (PCB soldering board supplied)

Oil cooler adapter (this is dependent on transmission sourced, available on this web store)

Oil cooler lines and oil cooler core (front mount oil cooler core and brackets available if required)

Suitable shifter for the Turbolamik TCU, suitable shifters can be researched in the Turbolamik manual, we suggest the A90 supra shifter available on this webstore

Shifter mounting solution and/or console

Oil cooler thermostat (optional)

Billet 8HP pan (optional)

Transmission remote breather solution (optional)

Front shaft spacer, dependant on vehicle lift (optional)

All associated oils and labour for install

Cruise control note:
The 8 speed kit will not work with factory cruise control. If the vehicle has factory cruise control an aftermarket cruise module will be required for the install of the 8 speed transmission. These use the factory cruise stalk. Please note this will mean multimap switching with the cruise control stalk will no longer work. If you have a pre cruise control vehicle contact us and we can remove cruise control from the kit however a small amount of custom wiring will be required to make the TCU function.

This is a kit of the difficult or fiddly components for an LC70 8speed swap. It is not a complete kit, and we urge anyone considering attempting such an undertaking to do their own research and be aware this is not a small job and the transmission may require final fine tuning once installed.


As always, we are here to assist and teach as far as install or tuning goes, but the final outcome is dependent on you. This transmission control unit is a full stand alone transmission controller and as such requires tuning to each unique vehicle and combination. There are plenty of videos and information online especially on our YouTube channel Zeroto60. 

Final notes: This assembly has the same overall length as the OEM Toyota 5 speed manual transmission. Due to space constraints the transfer case has been rotated 9 degrees for clearance. In most cases driveshaft lengths will not need to be altered, however depending on vehicle lift and modifications it is advised to check shafts remain in an acceptable range. Transfer case input gear MUST be changed to our specially machined gear to receive the connecting shaft. We can supply new OEM units (minus bearings and clips) machined for an extra cost, we can machine your input gear, or we can supply a machined gear on an exchange basis with a core charge which is refundable when a suitable gear is returned. Due to the many components to this kit and it's popularity, there may be a short lead time occasionally, if this is an issue or a build is urgent, please contact us before placing your order so we can confirm a current lead time.
